Physical Chemistry

Synopsis

The aim of this course is to provide understanding of the fundamental of chemical thermodynamics and equilibrium involving gases, liquids and solutions, analysis of phase equilibrium as well as the kinetics of reactions. The delivery methods throughout the course includes lectures, discussion, test, quiz, assignments and final examination. The communications and problem solving skills in students shall be cultivated and developed throughout the course.

Individual Assignment

Learning Objective

CLO 3 : Adopt personal skills in completing task related to the major concepts in physical chemistry (PLO5, LOD8, A2)

Instructions

This is an individual assignment. By using the knowledge of gas law, each student need to build a functioning mini hot air balloon.

The hot air balloon need to be able to float in the air (functional)
Each student need to write a weekly progress in making the hot air balloon and the progress need to be reported in their e-portfolio from week 1 to week 9.
Each student need to post ONE (1) video (in Youtube) each week and embed the link to their e-portfolio each week to explain the progress and the theory behind the idea of making their hot air balloon. (Need to have firm justification on which gas law was employed in building the hot air balloon and the choice of material used in building the hot air balloon. (Minimum number of video is 9)
Video need to be recorded in a well lit environment with clear voice. Marks shall be given on the communication skills, eye contact and the accuracy of the explanation.
In week 10, a small event shall be conducted to launch the hot air balloon build by each students. Marks shall be given on the creativity and functionality of the hot air balloon build.

CSR PROGRAMME: DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF SCIENCE: EXHIBITION. EXPLORACE AND HOT AIR BALLOON COMPETITION

This is a community service program (Program SULAM) between students registered in the Physical Chemistry BWK10103 course and schools around Muar District, Johor. In this event, school children (both primary and secondary) compete to make a functional hot air balloon model with the items provided the Physical Chemistry students.

From this activity, the students shall brush up their communication skills and knowledge to explain to the school children on the functionalities and theories behind the hot air balloon activity. This activity was joined by SK Kampung Balang Darat, SK Temiang, SMK (P) Sultan Abu Bakar and SMK Sri Muar.
