Reza Band

New non-surgical treatments for extra-oesophageal reflux:

Reza Band from Somna Therapeutics is a device worn around the neck at night to provide sufficient pressure on the cricopharyngeus muscle to prevent nocturnal extra-oesophageal reflux.

The results of a limited clinical trial published in Gastroenterology in 2012 [r-liv], revealed, "All patients tolerated the device well and completed the study. There were no complications or complaints for the use of the device."

A questionnaire is provided for prospective users. (Compare the list of symptoms described in the chapter on Extra-Oesophageal Reflux).

To reduce nocturnal reflux, patients are advised to raise their bed head or use a wedge pillow and to sleep on their left side.

MedCline is a device designed to make that easier to achieve.

A paper published by the Cleveland Clinic in 2014 [r-lv] conlcuded, "In patients with nocturnal heartburn and regurgitation despite PPI use, the Medcline Sleep Positioning Device significantly reduced nocturnal symptoms, morning impact of nocturnal GERD, and concern about nocturnal GERD after two weeks of use."

A paper published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology in 2015 [
r-xlvi], concluded, "The sleep positioning device maintains recumbent position effectively. Lying left-side down, it reduces recumbent esophageal acid exposure."
