Polyps

With polyps being reported in about 1 in 6 people on long term PPI use, we decided to look at recent research regarding their formation. *

They are usually Fundic Gland (Gastric) Polyps or Duodenal Polyps and almost invariably benign.

* Out of 140 PPI users with Barrett's who responded to a straw poll in the BarrettsEsophagusAwareness Facebook group, 22 reported polyps.

Below are links to the 10 research papers from recent years that mention polyps (in reverse chronological order).

Most significant findings regarding incidence of FGPs chronologically, appear to be:

  1. The December 2017 paper by Mohamed Khalaf et al which found no correlation between polyps and PPI, finding them rare and of unknown clinical significance.

  2. The 24 September 2018 paper by Mamoru Tanaka et al which found the polyps are "generally considered benign".

  3. The October - December 2018 paper by Hugo Leite de Farias BRITO et al whose discussion may be read here.

A correlation between colorectal polyps was noted amongst those with Barrett's Oesophagus.
