(GH)(48)(OB) Thomas - Frazier Building - Original Post Office and Corner Drugstore - The building to the right of the trolley ticket office at 439 McKean Avenue served many purposes and was the original post office location in Donora until 1929. The building had three storefronts on McKean Avenue at 437 McKean Avenue on the left, 439 McKean Avenue in the middle and 443 McKean Avenue on the right, and two additional storefronts on Fifth Street.Â
Built in 1901, it's one of Donora's original buildings (Sanborn - 1902). In 1902, 437 McKean Avenue was a hardware store, 439 McKean Avenue was a drugstore and 443 McKean Avenue was a post office (Sanborn - 1902). In 1909, 437 McKean Avenue was a grocery store, 439 McKean Avenue was a post office, and an insurance office and 443 McKean Avenue was a barber shop, and 207 Fifth Street was a wallpaper store (Sanborn - 1909). In 1914, 437 McKean Avenue was vacant, 439 McKean Avenue was a post office and 443 McKean Avenue was a drug store (Sanborn - 1914). In 1921, 437 and 439 McKean Avenue was a post office and 443 McKean Avenue was a drug store, and 207 Fifth Street was a tailor, and 209 Fifth Street was an electrical store (Sanborn - 1921).Â
In 1917, this building was gutted by a fire, including the roof, and was totally rebuilt from the inside retaining most of the exterior walls in the process. The Donora Historical Society has photos of the aftermath. The Corner Drug Store eventually moved from across from McKean Avenue into this building by 1921 and was later called Herk's Corner Drug Store as late as 1951. On the second floor were professional offices for George O. Frazier, Attorney at Law and Ralph Waldemar Koehler, M.D. Dr. Koehler was one of the doctors who helped patients during the 1948 Smog. Later, 437 McKean Avenue was Sun-Wall Paper and Paints. In 1994 and 1996 and 2000 and currently, 439 McKean Avenue was and is Mon Valley Ceramic Supply. In 1976, 443 McKean Avenue was J&B Import Company - Wholesale Distributers in Venetian Glass, Ceramics & Spanish Mediterranean owned by Morris and Allen Ackerman. In 1951, 439 McKean Avenue was the State Liquor Store. In 1963, 207 Seventh Street was Donora Real Estate Company. In 1994 and 1996 and 2000, 443 McKean Avenue was Kibler's TV Services & VCR.
