This activity will introduce you the reaction between acids and bases that create salts and how to predict the pH of a salt.
Salt Activity
Print out the worksheet: Salt Activity
You are given the name of a salt. You must work backwards and determine what acid and what base react to form that salt. Fill in the chart. Don't forget to balance the reaction!
The salt solution of each salt was tested with pH paper. Using the pH paper scale, determine the pH of each salt solution and record it in the chart.
Look back at the type of acid and base (strong or weak) that reacted in each reaction and examine the resulting pH. Answer question 7 based on the patterns that you observed.
You need to refer to the list of strong acids and strong bases for that question: (all others are weak!)
Strong Acids
Hydrochloric Acid
Nitric Acid
Sulfuric Acid
Hydrobromic Acid
Hydroiodic Acid
Perchloric Acid
Strong Bases
Lithium Hydroxide
Sodium Hydroxide
Potassium Hydroxide
Calcium Hydroxide
Strontium Hydroxide
Barium Hydroxide
