Open the Google Document and this lab page either side by side using two windows or in two different tabs so you can jump back and forth and answer the questions as you go along.
Part 1: Establishing the pH Scale
Purpose
The purpose is to develop a pH scale for strong and weak acids and bases.
STOP - Go to the google document and answer the question.
Background
The pH scale goes from 0-14 and is used to determine how acidic or basic a solution is.
An indicator is a chemical that changes color in the presence of an acid or base. You will be using pH paper which has a liquid indicator dried on paper. Based on its color, you can determine an approximate pH value for a substance.

Materials
Read the procedure below and list all of the materials required to complete this part of the lab. Do not forget to include chemicals and glassware.
Procedure (This would be the procedure you would do if you were in the room.)
Fill a spot on the spot plate with each of the 5 solutions we are testing: strong acid, strong base, weak acid, weak base, and neutral.
Using the pH paper, determine the pH value of each solution and record in data table.
STOP - Go to the google document and list the materials that are used for this lab.

STOP - Now go to the google document, fill out the table and answer the conclusion questions for part 1.
Part 2: pH of Household Products
Purpose
The purpose is to determine which household items are acids and bases and to create a pH scale.
STOP - Go to the google document and answer the question.
Hypothesis
STOP - Go to the google document and fill in your guesses for your hypothesis. Remember it is ok if you get these wrong. It is a guess.
Procedure (This would be the procedure you would do if you were in the room.)
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FILLED IN THE GUESS COLUMN OF YOUR DATA TABLE.
Dip a strip of pH paper into a household product to determine the pH.
Based on what you learned in part 1, determine if that substance is an acid or a base.
4. Repeat for the other 9 household products.

STOP - Now go to the google document, fill out the table and answer the conclusion questions for part 2.
