Deerhurst Presbyterian Church recently began an ambitious capital campaign — Under One Roof — to fund several necessary building projects. Better yet, 10% of the money spent on building projects will be set aside to fund a dedicated, multi-year expansion of our important church-related Mission ministries and initiatives.
After a year of planning, prayer, and discussion, we are now preparing to fund new roofs for all the Deerhurst buildings, repair external masonry façades, and complete related internal repairs, all to extend the life of our facilities well into the future! All of us who have attended Deerhurst in past years have benefited from the work of prior generations of leaders who created the beautiful, loving space we use today. Now is our time to reinvest in the church facilities so that future generations can enjoy the fellowship, mission, and service that are so important to our community.
Our improvements require funding, so we set a goal of $550,000 for basic needs. As of March 2026, we have already received pledges totaling more than $450,000. Please help Deerhurst reach its goal.
Understanding the Projects
Deerhurst Presbyterian Church (DPC) has a hybrid roof consisting of an 86-year old slate roof over the old sanctuary (now choir room and offices), a 70-year slate roof over the sanctuary and a 25-year old asphalt roof installed as part of the Deerhurst 2000 project. The bell tower brickwork is eroding causing water infiltration and weakening its integrity.
The original church building was constructed in the 1930s. DPC celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2025. The Building & Grounds (B&G) Committee does an excellent job of maintaining the church’s infrastructure cost-effectively. Maintenance and repair needs are routinely prioritized and addressed within the annual budget. Even with preventive maintenance, there comes a time when major infrastructure repairs are needed. Currently, our focus is on the church’s original slate roof, which has exceeded its expected lifespan and requires replacement. Masonry repairs are also needed to prevent water infiltration.
The major focus of this capital campaign is to replace DPC’s roof and perform masonry repairs. The recommendation is to replace the slate roof with an attractive and durable 50-year metal roof, replace the asphalt roofs with asphalt, and the rubber roofs with rubber. Masonry repairs to the bell tower and sanctuary walls are necessary to stop leaks causing damage. Beyond the brick-and-mortar and related interior repairs, funds will also support targeted mission projects.
The B&G committee led by Mark Fera has been meeting with contractors and getting quotes for the brick repair and roof replacement. Work on the bell tower is expected to commence in the spring of 2026.
The Deerhurst mission committee is excited about the Under One Roof capital campaign. We understand 10% of the pledges will be made available to our committee to expand mission activities. We are eager to explore the opportunities it will provide to meet our purpose statement.
The Mission Outreach committee’s purpose is to provide opportunities for the members of Deerhurst Presbyterian Church to share the good news in word and deed to our community and the world.
We are diligently seeking ways to help members of the congregation grow their faith through serving others by sharing our time, talents and treasure. We are committed to exploring with Deerhurst members and friends how they are currently serving others and what would motivate them to get more involved in serving others in the future. In that regard the mission committee will conduct in-person discussion opportunities as well as a survey of members and friends to help us expand our mission activities in the next three years.
