While I'm not a fan of redoing work, I'd rather get it right than call it good enough. So even though my nut-tube coupling ring was nicely done and a fine fit, I decided that trying to support the hefty spindle with only a couple machine screws going maybe 1/8" into a polymer nut didn't sound all that appealing. After thinking that maybe I could re-make the aluminum ring and tap it, then thread the outside of the nut to get around this (and subsequently discarding the idea upon realizing that doing so could be a huge pain), I decided to just re-make the ring with a flange that I could attach the nut to (it has 1/4" holes in its flange).

Anyway, after another couple hours of work, it's done and looking good. Better yet, it only took one attempt! You'd think I'd done this before or something...

I also drilled and tapped holes for securing the end cap for the other end of the tube. I'm pretty sure 4 10-24 screws was overkill, but better that than the other way around. That, and I had the machine screws, drill bit, and tap on hand.
