This piano piece is dedicated to my friend for over twenty years, Duane C. Cole, who died in November 2015. He worked on construction jobs as a carpenter, but had a passion for music, and was once very proficient on guitar. In fact, Jerry Garcia invited Duane to be in the Grateful Dead, but as the bass player, so Duane declined. Duane was particularly fond of ragtime and blues. Although his life was not always easy, he maintained a consistently positive outlook. I wrote "Old Carpenter's Rag" with a mix of feelings, hoping to incorporate ragtime and blues elements into something Duane would have enjoyed.
