1. Set power of x-ray source to 1.2 kw. Place a voltage and current value of 40 kV and 30 mA, respectively.

Power setting can give high intensity readings and can cause vibrations on the beam conditioners. Vibrations can cause misalignments. The maximum power allowed for the x-ray source is 2kW. However, this is not chosen because vibrations must be avoided.

2. On beam conditioners:

Set monochromator 1 at an angle that removes the K\beta peak.

Perform AXIS 1 scan to remove the k\alpha_2 peak.

The scan rotates the second crystal (monochromator 2) at a precision based on step size. Cover a range of 1200 arcsec to obtain a plot of two characteristic peaks as a function of the angle of rotation.

The peak with the highest intensity is called K\alpha_1 peak. Set the crystal at this position.

3. Insert a vertical slit (width of 0.5 mm) to reduce the divergence of the beam.

4. Mount the sample on the stage.

5. Perform AXIS 2D scan to ensure that the x-rays are incident on the center of the sample.

The highest peak provides the center position.
