The President

The head of state is the President of the Republic who is elected for a period of six years and may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms. President Sauli Niinistö was elected president in Februar 2012. Sauli Niinistö has a long career in Finnish politics. The last years he has been the European Investment Bank vice-president. The President is chosen by direct popular vote, with a run-off between the two leading candidates to emerge after the first round of voting.
