Patients who have been sexually assaulted:
1. Get medically cleared
2. Get transferred to Methodist Specialty Transplant Hospital ED for SANE Exam (if they want) for age 18 and above.
Age less than 18, transfer to CHoSA ED 4.2190
If a patient is critically ill, the Methodist SANE nurse will come to our site to perform the exam.
Clothes should be preserved in a labeled PAPER bag and sent along with the patient. We will put these is a labeled cabinet in room 8 when we get them.
If the patient has to urinate, save the urine in a labeled cup and keep it with the patient.
Timing
SANE exams will be done within 96 hours of the assault for adults.
At ANY time post assault for under age 18.
Police
For adults, are only called with the consent of the patient.
For under age 17, are always called regardless of patient wishes.
Reimbursement
The State of Texas pays for evidence collection.
Medical treatment is initially paid for by the patient. The State may reimburse the patient later for the largest of their bills related to the crime.
Sexual Assault Kit
Age 14 and above must consent. Under age 14, is done in any case - though hopefully try to get patient's consent. Does not apply to us as we will not be doing the kits
Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault
The referral hospitals should have these kits to save blood and urine to test for chemicals related to potential DFSA.
