Rabies Process
If a patient comes in and needs a rabies vaccination due to an animal bite, the following needs to be followed:
1) Fax the paperwork to the health department.
a. If the animal is in quarantine, the patient DOES NOT need vaccinations.
b. If the animal is not in quarantine, the patient requires vaccinations.
2) If the patient requires vaccinations, we give the patient their initial vaccine and shots here.
3) We then refer the patient to follow-up with their primary care physician (if insured or if they have a PCP) or the one of the UHS Express Care Clinics (for insured that PCP won’t give follow-up shots or uninsured) below to obtain a prescription for the vaccination and to receive their follow-up vaccinations.
NO PATIENT SHOULD COME BACK TO THE ED TO RECEIVE FOLLOW-UP RABIES VACCINATIONS!!
DO NOT SEND PATIENTS TO THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WITH A PRESCRIPTION FOR THE VACCINATION, THEY WILL BE TURNED AWAY. THEY NEED TO FOLLOW-UP WITH THEIR PCP. The PCP must have a conversation with the State of Texas in order to prescribe and obtain the vaccination.
