Classroom Update

Post date: Sep 10, 2011 1:49:09 PM

It was great seeing so many of you at Back to School Night!

Just a reminder, if you plan to volunteer in the classroom and/or chaperone field trips, per district policy, you must be fingerprinted and TB tested. TB tests are to be renewed every four years. Send in proof to the office and they will update the records.

Volunteer schedules have gone home for library, science, and room parents. They were attached to your child's update if you signed up for one of those. We are looking for a few more volunteers to help with stations on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Stations will be from 1:05 to 2:35. We will try to utilize a website, Volunteer Spot, to coordinate these stations. You may sign up for individual dates. My understanding is that they even send you a reminder email before the station day.

Information about the Sacramento field trip went home this past week with the weekly update. Please return forms by Thursday, September 15 if you are able to chaperone the trip. We have already completed field trip permission forms for the entire year.

Thank you again for all you to do to help support your child's education.

Language Arts

We finished reading Akiak this week, a tale of the Iditarod. We worked on some story maps and practiced the summarizing skill. We also learned about different types of sentences. Within the computer lab, we took the Quia test for the spelling words. This coming week, we will take the AR test for this story.

Science

Science vocabulary and outline sheets will be given to the students this coming week. They will be worth 10% of the student grade. Within lab, we noted differences between leaves and talked more about leaves and their purpose. We also are in the process of growing bean plants.

Social Studies

We finished lesson one of chapter one where we learned more about California's geography.

Math

This week we finished working on place value and started to learn more about rounding numbers up to the millions place. Basic facts quizzes for addition and subtraction were also given as this will be the next chapters within the math program. It will be very important for students to continue to practice their facts. It will be one of our activities in station time in one form or another. We also will continue to work in the computer lab with Math Facts in a Flash.
