Academic Team

Current Commander: Cadet Lieutenant Commander Hollenbeck

The academic team is open to those the would like to test their skills on a competitive level. Our team first started competing in Brain Brawls during the 2015-16 school year under Cadet T.T. Nguyen. To prepare for competitions, the academic team members started participating in Academic Postals, one of which ended with one team placing third despite being its first year participating. One of the teams managed to finish 8th overall in the State Championship after making it to the semi-finals, an astounding feat for our newly-developed team. Current practices for the 2022-2023 school year are TBD

There are two academic teams:

Standard Academic Team

This team goes to drill meets and takes a 100 question test in a 60 minute period at the designated time.
- The majority of the exam (about 2/3) deals with knowledge from the NS1, NS2, and NS3 books.
- Of the remaining 1/3, about 2/3 have to do with SAT/ACT questions (Math, Vocabulary, and Grammar).
- The remaining questions are about current affairs (State, National, International, and Outer Space).
To prepare for the this test, the academic team commander sends out quizzes on 'Quia' through the group me phone application or e-mail at least once a week.

Brain Brawl Team

One or two team participate in their own competitions in which both NS1, NS2, NS3 knowledge and reaction time is tested.
- Each team consisting of four members has to add up to no more than ten points.
  - Seniors: 4 points
  - Juniors: 3 points
  - Sophomores: 2 points
  - Freshmen: 1 point
- When a question pertaining to ROTC knowledge is asked, the first person to register in (with specialized competition buttons) can either gain the team 10 points or lose 5.
  - If the answer is correct, a follow-up question is asked to the team as a chance to gain more points.
- Teams who host their own Brain Brawls, designate jobs to each of its teammates.
  - Questions are selected from the NS1, NS2, and NS3 textbooks.
  - 'Bonus' trivia questions must also be determined.
  - Question-asking cadets and technology-rounded cadets are also a necessary function for the events.

It is possible to participate in both teams, however it is the Academic Commander's job to determine the teams for Brain Brawl. There is a certain level of commitment required: all members of the overall academic team MUST take the quizzes on Quia or else they will not be considered as participants.
