Wilkesia gymnoxiphium A. Gray (Family Asteraceae) is an uncommon species. It grows only in a few areas on Kaua`i where it is known by its Hawaiian name: Iliau. The general habitat of Iliau is dry, scruffy forests.
One of the areas in which you find Iliau appears to be undergoing severe erosion. This population is generally confined to a relatively small area which is bordered by two highways.
Erosion of the habitat is just one of the threats to the Iliau. Feral goats also eat the plants. Habitat modification by large forest trees may also be a problem.
Assignment
The general intent is to assess and characterize the "Iliau Erosion Site" (habitat and flora) so that future studies can use this baseline study to determine if there are Iliau population changes, the likely environmental causes, and to be able to predict future changes to both the habitat and flora.
The final product of this project should be defined by the team.
After the Preliminary Visit, the team must devise a detailed work plan that fits within the constraints of the project (time and resources) and present this for approval to the Camp Leader. Please allow time for feedback and revision. The work plan should include:
The final product should be accompanied by a set of recommendations about how this assignment can be improved.

Evaluation Rubric
Note that in this project, as well as all other projects, the team is being evaluated. All team members must recognize this and should work with the team leadership to define, complete and follow-up on the project.
