The remote Kalala Valley is a spectacular place. There are some great viewing spots along the upper rim of the valley which are easily reached from Highway 550. As a result, many visitors come to this area. The last "drive-in" viewing spot is the start of the Pihea Trail.
The first part of this trail contains many of the species which will be seen later on the trail. Learning to identify these species in this relatively accessible location will make future expeditions to this area more interesting and efficient.
Working along this trail also provides a great opportunity to enjoy some of Hawai`i's most spectacular vistas.

After the Preliminary Visit, the team must devise a detailed work plan that fits within the constraints of the project (time and resources) and present this for approval to the Camp Leader. Please allow time for feedback and revision. The work plan should include:
The final product should be accompanied by a set of recommendations about how this assignment can be improved.
