There's a scientific reason for this so-called 'gullibility.' It's something that's 'hardwired' into our primitive limbic system of our brains, the place where our instincts and irrational belief systems reside. The cerebral cortex is only a recent development among our species, say within the last 100,000 years (this is where our rational and logical thought processes take place and where us atheists have found our basis in reality.)
Consider the Jesus freaks, evangelicals and other deeply religious folks, all have reverted to that primitive limbic systems of our brains, the place where our deepest emotions reside. The 'born-again' Christian phenomena has a scientific basis. When people are in deep despair, near death, nearly starved, or other highly emotional states, the 'religious experience' is triggered. Hormones, dopamine receptors and other chemical reactions take place...all good for the body. They help to fight diseases, etc. It was a survival mechanism our bodies have devloped since the days of our primitive barbarian ancestors.
Unfortunately obsolete genes do not die overnight, so we'll being seeing the majority of the earth's population with a distorted world view for some time to come....and being gullible to the science-coverup conspiracy theory.
Just be content that the important members of our society, ie the majority of scientists, astronomers and others have more realistic world views. Another way to look at it, is to ask yourself, "will it be the NASA scientists and technicians that divert that planet killer asteroid from its course or the hand of god responding to the prayers of the faithful." I think you know where i'll place my bets.
