Other Suggested Group Activities
Since many of you will want to take advantage of the full cruise experience, we would like to suggest some non-group activities to do individually or as a small group. Some of these activities may be added to the schedule (TBD), however, any listed times are only estimates based on previous cruises. Since the cruise line releases the shipboard schedule on a day-to-day basis, we have no way of knowing the exact date or time of activities until we get onboard. Please use our tentative schedule as a general guide and we will give updates if there are any changes once we get onboard.
Excursions:
Ocho Rios, Jamaica:
This lovely island nation has a rich history of sugar plantations and much more, which can be discovered through various excursions.
One of the most widely recognized natural features in this area is the Dunns River Falls. It's a popular excursion, but be aware that the climb up the falls is slippery and best suited to those without physical limitations.
Jamaica is well-known for its Jerk chicken, but did you also know that "meat patties" were a popular food item? In fact, Jamaica is home to contentious debate about which company makes the best meat patties. If you can, check out the offerings of Juici Patties or Tastee Ltd., or better yet, try one of each and decide for yourself!
George Town, Cayman Islands:
One of our favorite excursions is to Stingray City, a well-known sandbar where the fishermen used to stop to clean their catch. The stingrays soon caught on to the abundance of food, and now it is a great place to swim with and inter-act with these docile creatures.
Want to tell everyone you've been to Hell and back? This natural area was created when water receeded to expose a now-extinct coral reef. This surreal landscape is an indescribable sight and offers the opportunity to shop and even send a postcard home.
Into nature and eco-touring? The Cayman Turtle Centre is a conservation facility and tourist attraction where you can learn about the local efforts to save endangered turtles and repopulate our seas.
Grand Cayman is a great place to snorkle, snuba, or scuba dive. The main part of the Great Barrier Reef is located at the north-side of North Sound in Grand Cayman.
Is the beach more your speed? 7-Mile Beach is a well-known coral-sand beach on the western end of Grand Cayman. Home to the island's most luxurious resorts, the beach is public property and you can walk the entire length (which is actually a little less than 7 miles due to erosion). Be aware, though, this is is the most popular and most developed area of Grand Cayman, so beaches may be crowded depending on the time of year.
Isla Cozumel:
There are many wonderful options on this small island:
For sun worshipers: There are several beach resorts that offer day passes, including Playa Miá, Chankanaab Park, and Mr. Sanchos. Paradise Island is also reported to be of high quality, but we have not been there.
Snorkeling, Snuba, and Scuba diving options are offered through the cruise line and at Chankanaab Park (inside the National Marine Park. Chankanaab Park also offers eco-tours, shows, and a swim-with-dolphins program.
Museums and Culture: We have enjoyed Discover Mexico Park, which offers programs on traditional cooking and crafts from the area (the one on chocolate is wonderful!) and exhibits of folk and fine art from the region, as well as a walk-through display detailing scale model replicas of early Prehispanic, Colonial, and Modern architecture. Museo de la Isla de Cozumel is the official museum of Cozumel. We have not visited this museum yet, but it offers programs and exhibits on the history of the island.
Shopping: You can take either a guided shopping tour offered by the cruise line, or take off on your own on foot or by taxi. Duty-free shopping is available right at the pier if you don't feel like exploring.
Suggested onboard group activities (when offered) include:
Formal Night Portraits
Group Photo
Disco Night
Karaoke
Deck Party
Musical Productions
Casino Night
Electric White/Blacklight Party
