Key message
Work out what you want from your web presence, how to achieve it and how to measure if it is successful.
The main purpose of this section is to ensure that you have thought about the aims of your club's web presence, how they will be achieved (strategy) and how you measure online success against your aims.
Aims
Initially, you should think about the aims of your web presence. Even if you already have a web presence, it is never too late to consider these. Typical aims are:
Strategy
To achieve your web presence aims you have a number of different Internet-based tools available to you and you will need to manage these different platforms to assisting you in carrying out various club processes. To do this you will need to have a web presence strategy in place. This is the main purpose of this guide. In examining the various Internet tools and considering the club processes that will be affected, you should also consider the various governance issues mentioned in the guide and how the roles of club volunteers are affected.
Success
The final key to having a successful web presence is measuring how successful it is on a (reasonably) regular basis. This will enable you to assess if your strategies are meeting your web presence aims. You can continue to use those strategies that work for you and amend or even eliminate those that do not.
Generation Gap
One of the issues often raised is a 'generation gap' between committee members. This can result in conservative attitudes to the use of the Internet or even a reluctance to use it. Some of these concerns are quite valid and it is important for the committee to have open and honest discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of using the web.
