Development of Algorithms for GK-2A Cloud Properties: GK-2A is a short term of Geostationary Earth Orbit KOrean Multi-Purpose SATellite-2A (GEO-KOMPSAT-2A). GK-2A has meteorological missions. It is a follow-on satellite of CMS, which is expected to finish its lifetime in 2018. Therefore GK-2A is planned to be launched in 2017. Among all the parts of GK-2A mission, I undertake development of cloud algorithms. I'm studying on the algorithms of cloud top properties (temperature, pressure, height), phase, optical thickness and particle size.
Examing Iris Hypothesis by Precipitation and Cirrus Cloud Amount: Iris hypothesis is about a negative feedback of the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) by the change of cirrus cloud coverage in tropical pacific region. However SST is an unreliable variable which changes fast under a cloud. Therefore another variable is needed to replace SST. When SST is relatively high in tropics, convective activity is known to be increase. Once a convection emerges, moisture descends and makes a convective column. When finally the ascended moisture loses buoyancy, its spreads horizontally and makes cirrus. Since they are linked, they share the limited moisture. Therefore if convective rain is strong, the moisture supply for cirrus cloud is reduced. We call such phenomenon as "Iris-like process" here. In this study we examined this negative relationship.

Development of the Cloud Retrieval Algorithm : In 2020, GK2B satellite will be launched that has sensor named Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS). The purpose of cloud algorithms is not only to enhance the utilization of cloudy pixels , but also to retrieve cloud for trace gas production and to provide as clear sky as possible so that trace gas research can be conducted.

Extreme weather events on climate change: The impact of climate change, such as global warming, affects the average state of weather patterns around the world, and extreme weather events by changing the frequency and intensity of occurrence. Increased extreme weather events lead to extensive damage to many fields in society. This research aims to investigate how extreme weather has been changed by global warming, focusing on the regional scale. Based on an understanding of these interactions, we develop the regional-scale climate model and diagnose the extreme weather events. Further, to adapt the impact of climate change, we estimate the physical risk quantitatively based on scientific findings of regional extreme weather events.
