American Mathematics Competition (AMC)

The AMC is the most prestigious contest available to high school students in the United States. Students at or below the tenth grade may take either the AMC 12 or the AMC 10, and students between the grades of 11 and 12, inclusive, must take the AMC 12. Each test consists of twenty-five questions, and the competitor has seventy-five minutes to answer as many of the twenty-five questions as he or she can. The tests are scored with six points given for each correct answer, one-and-a-half points given for each blank, and zero points given for each wrong answer. If the competitor scores well enough on either one of these tests (usually about 97.5 points on the AMC 12 and 120 points on the AMC 10), he or she is invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME), which is a fifteen-question, three-hour, short-answer exam. Students who do well enough on this test (usually ten or more questions correct) progress to the United States Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), which is a two-day, six problem exam.
