Many of us depend on the Google Cloud because it is easy and relatively foolproof to save your work. Not so when we are working with Microsoft, in a shared workstation environment.
In my sections of CIS105, you will always upload the final version of your Microsoft file, the ones with the extension of xls, .accdb, .doc or .ppt to your CIS105 shared folder and provide a properly named link on your portfolio page to download it . The PDF is embedded in your portfolio for display. It is not the assignment. I actually download and assess the linked file which created the PDF.
Microsoft has it own cloud environment which is different from Google. It is not available to us in our classroom, at this point. Google easily stores any Microsoft file, it will rarely display or edit it properly. In this class, you will always need to download your Microsoft files and open them with the installed Microsoft software.
I will often ask you to value your work enough to download and open your links before you leave the classroom. Make sure that what you think is linked is the updated file with a clean filename. This is often not the case unless you are savvy and conscientious about saving and uploading. You will lose most of your points, if the assignment is Microsoft and the final file is not linked on your portfolio page.
File Management is important to safeguard your work and the time you put into it. In this class, when you are working with files, set up your view as follows:
File extensions must be turned on in View.
Name column must be resized so that you can see the entire filename
Add a column for date modified, move it into view
Move file size into view
Sort by Date Modified and your most recent files will go to the top.
Types of files:
All Microsoft files with the following extensions must be manually added to your CIS105 Google Drive Folder and must be manually updated whenever you make changes. Examine the extension, date, and file size of the attached file. Microsoft files must be updated uploaded for every single change you make to the file. For these assignments almost all your points are in Microsoft file.
.doc Word
.accdb Access
.xls Excel
.xlsm Excel Macro
.pptx PowerPoint
Many of you have your file extensions turned off and you are getting your files from Quick Access, which will keep you from being successful in CIS105.
