Collections of apple diversity for conservation of cultural and biological diversity have been on the decline in most regions except for collections made for commercial purposes. However, some orchard managers as individuals or in groups have been bringing together collections of heirloom apples in order to conserve local diversity, particularly as it is used for production of local cider products. We have found many such private collections in areas such as Austria, Canada, England, France, Germany, and the United States to name a few. All of these collections have expressed to us a willingness to share graft materials and any knowledge they have pertaining to apples and cider in the area.
