Goals
Two main goals:
- To offer a tournament in the more European style, played over a month or two (or in our case three) rather than crammed into a day or a weekend. You play one game in an evening and can prepare and focus hard without getting exhausted.
- To declare a top city student (K-12) in a serious tournament series.
- We will award a "Brilliance Prize" for the best game submitted in the tournament.
Other goals:
- Family friendly by not forcing a commitment to specific days - format allows you to choose (with your opponent) which evening to play, so you can schedule it with other family constraints. To make logistics work, director will work closely with families to coordinate specific days. You can even fit this tournament around your vacation.
- This will have a high profile in the city: mayor Javier Gonzales will award the Mayor's Cup in front of the City Council.
Format
- At the start of the month you are given two pairings.
- Games are played Wednesday evenings at Santa Fe downtown library.
- Director works with you and your opponent to schedule which Wednesday you can both show up.
- Games are played with director in attendance at downtown library.
- In extremely special circumstances director will allow scheduling a single game at a different time or place.
- There will be warm-up tournaments rolling around the year in this mayor's cup format, but the definitive mayor's cup will be the one played in the fall.
- Time controls: game in 35 minutes with a 5 second delay.
