Lower School Grading and Assessment
Grading and Evaluation in PE Methuen Public Schools has adopted a standards-based report card system. Physical Education, like every other subject area, has standards that students by which will be assessed and evaluated. These standards are based on the NASPE Standards (National Association for Sport and Physical Education). The PE staff across the district has designed assessments, which will be used to evaluate the meeting of these standards. The first standard is based upon a child's ability to perform motor skills. The second is based on a child's ability to understand the topics and concepts addressed in class, and the third represents appropriate behavior and responsibility in the PE setting. The standards are listed below:
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns in varied physical activities
Demonstrates knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies associated with physical activity
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
We will be doing different types of assessments that will not necessarily be included when it comes to evaluation in PE. As a PE staff we want our students to learn about assessing themselves, others, and taking our teacher assessments to improve their skill or understanding on PE topics. We will be doing peer and self assessments within each unit. Students will assess how they think they are doing, along with their peers assisting in assessment as well. The teacher may also do different assessments on the students ability to perform different motor skills.
