Within the chloroplast organelle, there are stacks of membranes. Each stack of membrane is known as a thylakoid. The thylakoids are laid one on top of another. Each stack of thylakoids is known as a granum. (Plural: grana) The jelly-like substance within the chloroplast is known as the stroma. (Not inside syllabus!)
Function:
- Green pigment, chlorophyll absorbs light energy and converts it into chemical energy that is stored in carbohydrates made during photosynthesis. Responsible for the process of photosynthesis.
