There are many services Thurston Conservation District (TCD) provides that may not cross your mind.
Please realize that storing horse and farm animal manure can impact our water supply and/or be offensive to neighbors with smell and insects, such as flies.
Manure areas can become a source of pollution if the area is located near a drainage ditch, culvert, stream, or runoff into waterways
If your confinement area is located near a source of surface water, it should be built up and graded so that runoff from the confinement area flows away from ditches and streams. A fence at the top of the grade is recommended to limit animal access to surface water. Exposed soil on the water side of the slope should be revegetated to stabilize the bank and prevent erosion.
If you have manure for which you have no use, call the Thurston Conservation District.
We have a manure brokering service that can match you to someone needing manure.
