Speaker/s at April Meeting
CQU ORAL HEALTH

Lecturer Karen Smart was joined by two students, Leah and Cami, for an extensive presentation on Oral Health. They brought a display which included oral health products, models of teeth and gums, flyers and information sheets.

The clinic at the University is accessed via Norman Road and is staffed by students who are supervised. Costs are cheaper than usual as they are heavily subsidised.

Their talk covered a range of oral-health-related topics and bits of advice or information including:

Speaker at March Meeting
SALLY PURVIS - CQU PODIATRY

Sally was the guest speaker at our March meeting. She is a lecturer in podiatry at CQU and works mostly as a 'high-risk podiatrist in hospitals.

We learnt that feet are the most neglected part of the body, but are crucial for our mobility which in turn is crucial for our independence. The foot has 26 bones, hundreds of joints and ligaments. Twenty-nine muscles of the foot and ankle are involved in taking a step.

Sally explained how and why changes occur to our feet and legs, particularly as we age. Causes can be weakening of muscles, deterioration of the skin and its integrity; effects of chronic diseases such as diabetes and side-effects of medications. Diabetes and medications may affect the sensitivity of our feet, through blood flow changes, which is important for postural changes and balance.

Coming up in  May 2024
WATERLINE at the MARINA (May)

On Thursday May 16 at 10 am we will visit the Waterline restaurant at the Keppel Bay Marina for morning tea.

A member of the Wilson family will be our guest speaker to talk about the history of the Marina which opened in 1996 offering a gateway for boating out to the Keppel Islands.

This award winning tourist facility was inspired by a vision of this project in 1989.

You can buy your morning tea but will need to text Valda if you plan to attend.

The Month That Was
COOBERRIE PARK WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (March)

A group of 15 of us joined the Anything Goes activity in March. We visited Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary and had a wonderful day despite the inclement weather. We ventured around the park to view and interact with the huge range of animals. Many animals ranged freely and were more than happy to join us for photo-ops.

The highlight of our visit was the 'show' where we enjoyed an informative talk by the staff.

It was good to learn that the animals we were meeting were either born in captivity or had been rehabilitated in the on-site hospital, but for various reasons, related to their welfare, they were not able to be released into the wild.

Thus retirement at Cooberrie was a good outcome.

What is U3A?

"Third Age" refers to the period of active retirement, which follows the first age of childhood and formal education and the second age of working life, and which precedes the fourth age of dependence.

The term “University” is used in the original sense of the word - of an association or community of teachers and scholars, united in the pursuit of knowledge.

U3A is a community organisation which promotes healthy ageing by sharing educational, creative and leisure activities provided by their own members.

We ask for no qualification for membership and we award no degrees or diplomas.  We are a lively and friendly group offering a wide range of activities and we welcome all seniors to our organisation.

We invite you to explore this website to find out what we offer to seniors along the Capricorn Coast. If you would like to enquire further, please either come along to one of our events, contact one of our committee members or email us at u3acapcoast@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you!
