Allan Briggs, author and dedicated champion of local birds, delivered a talk to a keen audience on 29 January 2026. After the talk attendees chatted and enjoyed a sumptuous morning tea at KBSC.
Allan's talk included many surprising and important details about local birds. For example
the Capricorn Yellow Chat is the only endemic bird in our region. It is critically endangered with just 250 individuals spread over several colonies.
climate change is causing several species, who had until recent years only come as far south as Mackay, to now be regular visitors to our area. Equally, other birds, once prevalent here, are now moving further south.
the Pacific Black Duck is now threated by interbreeding with the Mallard - causing more hybrids than Pacific Black Ducks.
some of our local birds travel around 24,000 kms annually in their migratory route from Siberia or Alaska to Capricornia.
Allan also talked about the diets and habitats related to various birds and noted that a plant called Little Kurrajong was a great plant to attract birds that feasted on insects.
Allan invited locals to take part in the 'Birds in Capricorn Project.' The project involves updating the database of local birds. Participants spend 20 mins per month documenting birds in their own backyard. More information is on the website - https://birdlife.org.au/groups/birdlife-capricornia
Many thanks to Allan, to Jade at Keppel Bay Sailing Club and to our event organisers.
We'll meet on 23 February to enjoy a 1992 movie, Brassed Off.
Our top books for 2025 were:

2. The Islands - Emily Brugman
3. The Promise Seed - Cass Moriarty
How are your cryptic crossword skills? Try these two.
Clue: Bird seen in the museum.
_ _ _ (3)
Clue: Angry report on Dirty Duck?
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (8)
Solutions:
The first solution is 'emu.' It is a kind of 'bird' and you will find it 'in' the letters making up the words 'the museum.'
The second solution is 'wildfowl.' 'Wild' is a synonym for 'angry' and a 'duck' is a kind of 'fowl' ... thus 'wildfowl.'

A big thank you to Shane who delivered boxes of donated goods on our behalf.
The event organisers would like to thank the Yeppoon Community for their support.
Each month we tackle a different challenge. In December the instruction was simply, 'character.'
Unsurprisingly, we all interpreted the brief in our own way and also unsurprisingly, the results made for some engaging reading.
"Third Age" refers to the period of active retirement, which follows the first age of childhood and formal education and the second age of working life, and which precedes the fourth age of dependence.
The term “University” is used in the original sense of the word - of an association or community of teachers and scholars, united in the pursuit of knowledge.
U3A is a community organisation which promotes healthy ageing by sharing educational, creative and leisure activities provided by their own members.
We ask for no qualification for membership and we award no degrees or diplomas. We are a lively and friendly group offering a wide range of activities and we welcome all seniors to our organisation.
We invite you to explore this website to find out what we offer to seniors along the Capricorn Coast. If you would like to enquire further, please either come along to one of our events, contact one of our committee members or email us at u3acapcoast@gmail.com
We look forward to hearing from you!
