BUSH 602 is the first zero-credit course offered at the Bush School and has been created to help students learn writing skills while working toward the Medal of Excellence.
What will students learn/do in this course?
Students will begin work on the ePortfolio, a required component of the Medal of Excellence. The course focuses on guiding students through the reflective process about what they are learning across interdisciplinary experiences, such as participation in the Leadership Program, capstone courses, internships, and other high-impact experiences. By learning specific writing strategies, students learn to write clear, coherent, well-developed reflective essays—skills vital not only to the ePortfolio, but to classroom assignments and workplace writing.
IMPORTANT: This website describes the course expectations and assignments. BUSH 602 Fall 2021 will be delivered through CANVAS.
What is reflective writing?
Reflective writing prompts students to . . .
Analyze their work (projects, experiences), mining for meaning
Identify the pattern or bigger idea that emerges from their analysis, i.e., connecting the dots of their experiences
Distinguish meaningful “dots” from irrelevant ones as they relate to the big idea
Articulate the value of the big idea to solving a new problem or addressing a new context
Why take this course?
Students in this course will have the opportunity to work toward the Medal of Excellence as they . . .
create their ePortfolios, which is required for the Medal of Excellence;
receive writing instruction and feedback on their work, helping them to foster their overall writing skills while simultaneously completing the ePortfolio;
develop a project structure, including interim and final deadlines for completing ePortfolio sections; and
receive full credit for all of the ePortfolio-related Medal of Excellence workshop requirements.
What is a zero-credit course?
Students register for a ZSCH course along with their credit-bearing courses, but are not billed for fees. However, ZSCH courses ARE noted on the student’s transcript, including the grade, but do not count toward a student’s GPA or progress toward the degree or full-time enrollment. In addition, dropped ZSCH courses stay on the student record and will be treated like other courses, with the appropriate grade assigned (Q, W, etc.).
This ePortfolio ZSCH course meets each week during the semester and requires work toward and assessment of ePortfolio units.
Who may take this course?
Only in-resident Bush School students may register for this course. The course is recommended but optional for students pursuing Medal of Excellence.
