 A while back when Tupolov was planning a Community Map Effort, I spent an afternoon browsing suitable islands and downloading DEMs... One of those was Limnos... It's an ideal choice - not too big, not too heavily settled, a nice variety of terrains from the flat plains and beaches to the more rugged northeast... you can see why BIS chose it... After Arma 3 was announced I retired it as a possible contender - BIS will do it MUCH better of course... but recently I was chatting with a few friends about A3 and Lemnos and what it might look like... So I decided to put my basic DEM in-game just to see... It's BIG! - Bigger than you'd think...! I made the DEM basically 1:1 - which makes the island around 34-35km across - probably pretty close to what BIS are planning... Elevations are pretty much spot on with real life too - to within a couple of meters at most... The quality of the DEM is something again... ASTER DEM's are well known for requiring a little tweaking - they don't do underwater topography at all - so I edited that in a little, but I didn't bother to tidy or smooth anything, not even the coastline where it doesn't quite agree with the roads data... ... Should mention that too I guess... I've overlaid a semi transparent road and major features layer on top of the distance/satellite layer... this all but disappears up close on the ground, but shows nicely from the air, and allows you to see where most of the major and minor roads/settlements/airport/etc are quite clearly... Just so it doesn't look entirely terrible at ground level there's a basic 4-way textures & clutter in case anyone goes exploring on foot... not that there's much to see - there's no objects at all... For those interested in such things... Terrain - 4096 Sat Layer - 10240 Cell - 10m Guess that's all the info you need.... NOT meant to be taken seriously as a terrain in it's own right, best think of this as merely a visualisation aid to give you a slightly better idea of the scale and topography...
