Wednesday On Main is delighted to present the energetic and engaging troupe of young dancers from The Portland Youth Dance Company. Performing original, hip hop, traditional and diverse cultural works, company members power up the Performing Arts Center stage on August 12th – and we cannot brag enough about the PYD and all it does. The mission of PYD is to cultivate personal artistic growth for youth, while striving for creative excellence in dance. Young teens are given opportunities in performing, creating choreography, and sharing this enriching and diverse experience with others. PYD seeks to:
Promote leadership through participation in all aspects of show production
Promote character through dance performance of diverse cultural works
Promote service through educational and performance outreach
Portland Youth Dance was founded in 1998, in recognition of the need to provide intermediate and advanced level young dancers with opportunity for performance without competition. Since 2002, through their scholarship efforts, over $50,000 has been awarded to 50+ under-privileged dancers to take dance classes and perform as part of the company. In 2014 PYD partnered with Learning Works to provide free after-school dance classes at elementary schools throughout Portland, reaching over 120 kids with the gift of dance. PYD members are encouraged to reach out and support younger or less experienced dancers in both the PYD organization and in the greater dance community. They bring their talents into the community where they provide free dance classes through the PYD Outreach program, for kids who otherwise may not have the opportunity to take formal dance classes.
