"Fake news" is a term that's all over the airwaves these days. Read more about the city of Veles, Macedonia, where much of it comes from (link). While some claims of fake news are themselves fake, there is a growing industry of false news stories on the internet. Here are sites that help debunk some of the myths you read.
The term we should use is "biased news." What can you look out for to determine whether the news you're looking at is biased?
- Does the site more often than not favor one side over the other?
- Tone
- Strong words
- Who benefits from the way the story is told?
- Biased words or images
Many people tend to watch news that simply confirms their already held beliefs. Be different.
