Project Adult Leader: Kathy Lyons
Embryology Leader: Jane LaPaglia
UPDATE regarding the Avian Flu: All of our poultry projects will continue depending on the CA State Requirements. We were not approved to have poultry in the San Mateo County Fair in June 2025, but we will continue to monitor and adhere to state requirements to see if we can continue with projects and showing for 25-26. Stay tuned!
The Poultry Project is for youth who are interested in breeding poultry or market poultry, including chickens and turkeys. Youth must be 9 years of age to raise market poultry, but any age youth may participate in the Laying Hen fundraiser and breeding poultry. The Poultry Project members may choose to raise their poultry at home or on the farm. We have a separate barn for market chickens, market turkeys and laying hens.
Laying Hen Fundraiser (Any age youth, once-a-week commitment)
Laying Hens is a great way for our newest members to get experience raising animals.
We care for baby chicks from Day 1 until they are ready to lay eggs. Then, the hens are sold to a local feed store to find backyard homes for them!
We raise a variety of breeds and learn about their anatomy, health, and breed characteristics.
We have meetings once a month. Families sign up for a once-a-week shift while the chicks are at Crystal Springs Farm from October to December.
Young 4-H kids get to learn from our more experienced kids and feel like part of the team. The older kids keep coming back for laying because nothing beats a cuddle puddle of chicks!
No background knowledge or experience is needed, we will help you Learn By Doing. We welcome all learning styles and ages 5 and up.

Breed is White Cornish Cross.
The project leader will order the birds for the youth and they will be ready to pick up in late March/early April.
Each youth generally starts with 6 birds and will need to brood them at home.
Brooding takes about 3-5 weeks.
Once the brooding period is complete, you may bring your birds to the farm.
