How To: Scout Rank

Welcome to your first rank, Scout.

Sometimes joining a new group can be daunting, I hope that this can make your scouting experience more welcoming. On this page you will find all the information you need to achieve the Rank of Scout. Make sure you have your scoutbook with you as you navigate this page.

Requirements group 1

1a, Repeat from memory the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto, and Scout slogan. In your own words, explain their meaning. 

This requirement is relatively self explanatory, if you are unsure about anything check pages 11-18. Yes, you have to read several pages but you'll be glad when you actually know what scouting is about.

1b, Explain what Scout spirit is. Describe some ways you have shown Scout spirit by practicing the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto, and Scout slogan.

This is just a more specific part of 1a, read page 15 to figure this one out.

1c, Demonstrate the Scout sign, salute, and handshake. Explain when they should be used.

1d, Describe the First Class Scout badge and tell what each part stands for. Explain the significance of the First Class Scout badge.

This one is very flexible. Check pages 19-20. As long as you understand the signifigance of the First Class Scout badge your interpretation might be very different, or similar to your friends.

1e, Repeat from memory the Outdoor Code. In your own words, explain their meaning.

Read pages 223-224. Remeber to leave no trace when camping.

1f, Repeat from memory the Pledge of Allegiance. In your own words, explain its meaning.

On page 60 you will find the full Pledge of Allegiance.

Requirements group 2

2. After attending a Scout troop meeting, do the following.

2a. Describe how the Scouts in the troop provide its leadership.

This question is self-explanatory, use the patrol leaders, SPL, and ASPL(s) as examples.

2b. Describe the four steps of Scout advancement.

Refer to pages 413-416 for this. 

2c. Describe what the Scouts BSA ranks are and how they are earned.

Refer to pages 27 and 413-416. It may help if you look through the advancement pages for this.

2d. Describe what Merit Badges are and hoe they are earned.

See pages 27 and 413-416

Requirements group 3

3a. Explain the patrol method. Explain the types of patrols that are used in your troop.

See page 25

3b. Become familiar with your patrol name, emblem, flag, and yell.  Explain how these items create patrol spirit. 

See page 26. Patrol flags are usually not designed until around camporee, so it may not be necessary to use the flag.

Requirements group 4

4a. Show how to tie the square knot, two half-hitches, and a taut-line hitch. Explain how each is used.

See pages 361-362

4a. Show the proper care of a rope by learning how to whip and fuse the ends of different kinds of rope.

See pages 361-362. Most ropes not made with plant fibers can be fused by sticking the end into a flame.

Requirement 5

Tell what you need to know about pocketknife safety.

See pages 379-381. The gist of it is the blood circle, in which you close your knife, put it in your hand, and make a circle in the air around you to make sure that nobody is in range of your knife.
