2017 Bowlin Cup in Review

Post date: Jun 11, 2017 1:06:27 AM

Spring floods had severely damaged the golf courses along highway 71. So much so that Berksdale would open only 9 holes for the remainder of the 2017 season. Storms had been passing through the area for days prior to the Bowlin Cup. Rain on Monday morning was a definite possibility. But the Golf Gods took care of the weather even if they could not keep the dew off the grass. The golfers could not recall such wet conditions on Highlands in recent history. But the sky was blue with warming temperatures! And so began the fourball competition. By the end of the day, 2 teams had 3 1/2 points and 2 teams had 2 1/2 points. No one realized how important those 1/2 points would be in the end!

Wednesday's alternate shot competition at Kingswood saw many matches go down to the final hole! And, as always, the alternate shot format was very popular. It is always interesting to see how the teams are going to match up their players for this competition. It is doubtful that there is any method to their madness!?! Points were now still tightly bunched in a range from 7 to 5 points.

Friday's singles competition returned to Highlands as damage to Country Club had not been entirely repaired. The day could not have been more lovely as the chill wore off quickly. Players had plenty of opportunity to consider their shots as play was extremely slow. Seems the marketing people have been successful in attracting golfers to our little corner of the world! That is always good news and bad news. But regardless of how slow the play was, the outcome was exciting as always!!!

After golf, players headed to Rhythm and Q at the Highlands Crossing for a selection between 5 outstanding lunch plates. We were grateful for their wonderful food and service. And, at long last, results were announced! It was an amazingly close competition with the top 3 teams finishing with 13, 12 1/2 and 12 points! Looks like handicaps do tend to "level the playing field". Be sure to check the results of the tournament to see how close the competition really was!!!

The committee would like to thank everyone who played this year ... especially the substitutes without whom the team competition could not take place. There are always inevitable bumps in the road and the substitutes are always so willing to help out when needed. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as the smiles on their faces would indicate!!! It is such a pleasure to organize this tournament for such a great group of friends!!!!!
