2022Bowlin Cup vs Mother Nature

The Bowlin Cup did not stand a chance against Mother Nature in 2022!  It was Mother Nature 3 and the Bowlin Cup 0!?!  The rain started Sunday, continued overnight and Monday's matches at Dogwood were canceled at 6am Monday morning.

Tuesday saw a brief break in the rain but the courses were quite wet.  Our hardy competitors showed up Wednesday morning for team photos and an attempt was made to get the matches in at Kingswood.  Alas ... about 9 holes into the matches and thunder and lightening caused us to abandon them.  We all raced into the clubhouse trying to beat the impending storms.  And, can you believe it, we all got off the course and left the parking lot before the storm arrived.  Chalk one up for the Bowlin Cup players!

Those Wednesday and overnight Thursday storms flooded the valley courses yet again and left Highlands a "soupy" mess according to golf pro Alex Sanford.  As such, the decision to attempt to play our Friday matches at Highlands was made on Thursday ... and we would not be completing any 2022 Bowlin Cup matches.

We would like to thank everyone for working with us on these difficult decisions!  There is a reason there is a saying which goes ... "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature!"  Here's to gorgeous spring flowers and lots of grass on the course fairways soon!!!

2021 Bowlin Cup ... Friday, May 7th at Country Club

Have you ever known such a hardy group of lady golfers?!?  The third day of the Bowlin Cup began with cool temperatures and sunny skies ... but we were not fooled.  There was rain in the forecast and we knew it!!!  Turn the clock ahead a couple of hours and then the rain started falling ... off and on.  Our stalwart group forged ahead with their play to determine our winner.  Our own Dolores Bowlin played through the rain as well.  Cold and tired, she managed to sink a putt on the 18th hole to tie her match!  Dolores also managed to shoot a lower 18 hole score than her age!!!

Partying on the patio waiting for the final matches to be completed was not an option with the rain spitting off and on.  So ... we took over the bar!  Many of the singles matches came down to the last hole including the last match off the course which would determine the winning team or teams as the case may be.

In the end, Team 2 (aka Chicks and Sticks) and Team 3 (aka Top  Ten) wound up tied for first place with 13 1/2 points each!  Our thanks to each and every one of you.  It was nice to have an almost normal event after the year of the coronavirus pandemic.  And a special thank you to our subs without whom we could not have a successful Bowlin Cup.  Hope to see you all again next year!!!

2021 Bowlin Cup ... Wednesday, May 5th at Highlands

It appears we cannot get away from the topic of rain this spring.  It rained almost all day Tuesday which guaranteed that there would be no way we could play Kingswood for our alternate shot game on Wednesday.  Fortunately, the Golf Office had room for the Bowlin Cup on ... Highlands!  Haven't we all wanted to play alternate shot on Highlands at least once in our lives?  And with carts on path?!?  No flags would be allowed for players with trouble walking 18 holes of golf.  Dolores Bowlin was asked if she would be able to make it through the 18 holes.  Her response, "I will hit the drives and my partner will just have to hit all the second shots!!!"

We all survived on a gorgeous sunny spring day and the results were quite interesting.  There are now 3 teams tied with 6 points going into the Singles matches on Friday at Country Club.  The plot thickens!!!

2021 Bowlin Cup ... Monday, May 3rd at Dogwood

Let's hear it for the triumphant return of the Bowlin Cup!!!  And almost back to normal for Bella Vista golf!!!  There were a lot of smiling faces on Dogwood today and a lot of laughs!  Despite some cloudiness, the day was beautiful.  We were grateful to be playing after damaging floods once again canceled play on the valley courses which include Kingswood, Country Club and Berksdale.  Team 3 had a great day!  We'll see if one of the other teams can tame these ladies.  They are on a roll!

A couple of highlights from the day included Cheryl Kautzer rolling in a 45 foot putt on number 1 which just happened to be the Longest Putt prize hole of the day!  Bonnie Crow was about 60 yards from the pin on number 15 when she chipped up with her wedge. Her ball went all the way across the green and hit the flag head on and dropped straight in the hole for a birdie!  She also had a stroke on the hole ... and she did not get to see any of it!?!  If you have a highlight you would like to share, please let us know.

2021 Bowlin Cup

It is almost time for the 2021 Bowlin Cup!   Play will take place on Monday May 3rd, Wednesday May 5th and Friday May 7th.  Further details are available on the flyer and entry form on this website.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Marianne Smyth, Sue Jacobson or Biddy Pyle.  We look forward to hosting this tournament again this year!

2020:  Year of the Pandemic

2020 was the year the coronavirus pandemic came to America.  In March of 2020, lives were put on hold as the nation scrambled to get the pandemic under control.  It would take months.  Golf was one game we could play but little was known about the virus in March and April of 2020.  As a result, it was with deep regret that the organizers had to cancel the 2020 Bowlin Cup.
