What is uncertainty?
What is uncertainty and how do I edit it?
Uncertainty, when in reference to georeferencing, is a measure of the ambiguity
present in the original, uploaded textual description and in the spatial data sources
used to perform georeferencing. In BioGeomancer, this uncertainty is measured
as a "radius" in meters around the selected location. The radius measurement is
an approximation of the "uncertainty footprint" which is best considered a polygon
as opposed to circle. BioGeomancer calculates uncertainty according to the best
practices developed as part of this project, and developed from MaNIS (Mammal
Network Information System) guidelines.
Uncertainty is represented in the BioGeomancer workbench maps as a grey circle
around the location marker(s). To edit uncertainty, select the map marker and pull
up the floating bubble. A link in the bubble is entitled "edit uncertainty". When clicked,
the edge of the uncertainty turns green and a "handle appears" on the circle. Drag this
handle to change the area of the circle. When you are satisfied with the new uncertainy
extent, double click on the handle to make the change "permanent". The new uncertainty
measure is updated in the "output" window to the left of the map.
