Locality Types

What types of locality can BioGeomancer understand and georeference?

BioGeomancer is able to georeference many different types of localities, and it is able to understand even more types than it is currently capable of georeferencing. Below is a list of known locality types and the status of BioGeomancer with respect to understanding them and georeferencing them.

There are numerous details about how interpretation is done by BioGeomancer that might impact the success or failure of a georeference. If you know for a fact that BioGeomancer is not performing as expected for a valid locality that it is supposed to be able to georeference, please submit an issue report so we can try to fix the problem.

Units BioGeomancer can understand:

(in upper or lower case) m, meter(s), metre(s), km, kilometer(s), kilometre(s), mi, mile(s), ft, foot, feet, yd, yard(s), nm, nautical mile(s)

Number formats BioGeomancer can understand (individual examples enclosed in parentheses):

(50,000), (50000), (50 000), (45.43123)

Headings BioGeomancer can understand:

(in upper or lower case) N, E, S, W, NE, SE, SW, NW, NNE, ENE, ESE, SSE, SSW, WSW, WNW, NNW

Variations meaning "near" that BioGeomancer can understand (all treated the same):

(in upper or lower case) near, vicinity (of), vic. (of), above, below, area (of), off

The word "at" is interpreted as a clause separator rather than as an indicator of proximity. For example, the phrase "3 mi NE Bumping Lake at Goose Prairie" would be understand by BioGeomancer as "3 mi NE Bumping Lake, Goose Prairie".

Examples of variations on locality type BF that BioGeomancer can understand:

between Gaastra and Stambaugh

from Gaastra to Stambaugh

above Gaastra and below Stambaugh

above Gaastra below Stambaugh

Note: "above Gaastra, below Stambaugh" will be interpreted as "near Gaastra, near Stambaugh" not "between Gaastra and Stambaugh".

Note: "Gaastra to Stambaugh" is not understood.

Examples of variations on locality type FOH that BioGeomancer can understand:

10 miles North of Gaastra

10 mi N from Gaastra

10 mi N Gaastra

10mi N Gaastra

Examples of variations on locality type FOO that BioGeomancer can understand:

Examples of variations on locality type NF that BioGeomancer can understand:

Examples of variations on locality type TRS that BioGeomancer can understand:

Note: There are many replicate TRS entries, each bound to a different meridian. To get the best results on a TRS search, include the State in a separate clause (i.e., in the StateProvince field in batch processing, or separated from the TRS by a comma or semi-colon in single georeference mode.
