Choosing Georefs
Why so many? How to choose?
How do I choose among multiple georeferences?
BioGeomancer will often return more than one georeference for a single textual locality description.
This is because there may be more than one place name in your description, or
because a single place name in your locality description refers to more than one location
on the Earth's surface. The easiest way to avoid a large number of alternate georeferences
is to provide administrative division data that is as specific as possible. Administrative divisions include
country, and lower level subdivisions such as state, province, municipality, or county.
If you do get multiple locations from a georeference,
determine if you can narrow down the place with other information you may not have
entered in the text box. Often, for example, a town and nearby mountain or other landscape
feature have the same name. If there are field notes or other information that make clear
which location was intended, use them! Otherwise, you may determine that you cannot decide
among the alternatives and either choose to not georeference that record or amend the
uncertainty radius to encompass both features (see how to edit uncertainty).
