Preaching About God More Effectively With A Bible Timeline Chart
In our Bible class some years ago, somebody, who had been a Christian and been involved in the Church for over 15 years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they were not referring to the pre-Moses law) I wonder how many Christians will really pick up the inaccuracy in this assertion. Moses came about about five hundred years after Abraham and so it is not possible. I have since put together a Biblical timeline chart and shown in a more graphic way the time period of people and events.
Years ago, I was teaching on the burial, life, resurrection and death of Jesus Christ, and a retired pastor and strong preacher of Scripture, who had been in the ministry for 40 years, came to me and reproved me smartly over some fascinating points I made and he referred to 1Ti 1:4'Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.' I quietly asked him if I was saying anything of a heretical nature at all, to which he replied"No". I continued to describe that in the case of that particular Scripture, it was not speaking to exploring the Bible but to the false teachings and philosophy of Gnosticism, but he wouldn't accept it. So, how can a 40 year preacher & worker in the Gospel, not know and understand about something that possibly half the books of the New Testament relate to?
How could he understand and teach the Bible in fullness without knowing about something that was so influential in the New Testament church? And then how can the congregation hope to figure out these things and be able to interpret their Bible properly, if they are not told?
Let's us as instructors and preachers sew together the aspects of the Bible and God's plan into a complete picture that our people are able to draw on for the remainder of their lives, helping them to figure out God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and ways to better interpret the Bible to live by.
It is not hard to do, and it's not boring if we're prepared to put in a bit of study with prayer and fervor, and just possibly you can employ a Bible Timeline also.
