From the pastor…
The anniversary of the Gettysburg Address was this week. I listened to commentary as someone spoke of Lincoln’s words that the world will little not or long remember what we say here, but it will never forget what they did here”.
As I write a column for this newsletter, I have looked at several years of pastors’ letters. What was said was important and well written. However, the content of the messages is more important than then the eloquence of the writing.
So, I come to words about this Advent and Christmas seasons. Advent is a time of preparation for Christ’s coming into our lives. Yes, it is about pre-Christmas, but it is also about Christ to us in other ways as well.
There are many Advent Words that point us to Christ in this season, and I share a few of them with you now.
Hope: This is an overriding word that addresses how we live in faith in this life. It calls us to live in hope for God’s appearing in many ways.
Here are a few more: Waiting, watching, listening, enduring, preparing, expecting, welcoming, receiving, marveling, gathering. I invite you to consider each of these words in the four weeks of worship ahead of us before the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
Then I ask you to celebrate, rejoice, pray and give thanks. I ask you to consider this word:
Immanuel – that is, God with Us
Christmas blessings to you and yours, now and forever
In Christian hope,
Pastor Alan
