three areas where intersections of justice are most critical - civil rights, equality in the church, act o fjustice in your daily lives.
some theology
two fundamental aspects that help make meaning of this life
catholic understanding of sacrement and the other is catholic social thought
honoring the dignity of the human person -
all of these ideas are derviced from our catholic sacremental understanding of our beliefs
catholic's have a scarmental view of the world
-- all of creation is good -- everything is created in good
humans are good -- in God's image and likelness
God lurks in every person experience, and obejct in our daily lives
all of our human relationshisps have the possibility of bringing the light of God in the world
Matthew 25 -- how we can encounter, touch God
preerential option for the poor -- think of the poor first -- also should have the very best of everything -- challenging , because it's so ture to the gospel message
-- God who offers effusive gifts to those who "don't deserve it"
charity is important but never sufficient -- that's where solidarity comes in -- goes beyond charginty to justice and human rights
radical witness to love of neighbor
at the heart of intersectional justice
ask questions of our own communities -- are they reflections of intersecting justice
transgender rights -- education, employemtn, hosuiong, pubic acomidation -- only 16 states have passed trans laws
twice as likely to be unemployed and homeless and 4x as likely to live in poverty -- 90% can encounter discrimination at work
1 in 3 have attempted suicide
LGBT -- reach out to women in the church --
perpetuated the myth of the illigitamicy of the woman's body
baptize, communion, marry the couple ... couldn't do it becuase of this body, could not hear confession
not as valuable or authoratative as the priest
when will gay men realize that the church hates us because the hated women first
when gay men exclude women, they participate in their own oppression
you have not let the hierarchy control your bodies -- why let them control the bodies of women?
in solidarity with those oppressed by unjust church doctrines
pope has referred to femenists as chovinests in skirst and belives that women's roles are better expressed in motherhood and virginity
also called same sex marriage as an anthropological setback
help our straight allies understand that women and LGBT globally suffer discrimination etc -- the RC church is powerful -- creating doctrines would be very influential
women and LGBT are very much a part of the poor that deserve our preferential option
Nikki Young
intersectionality - fundamental to lgbt liberation work
visions ofr justice that includee a variety of experiences -- movement that pays attention to who's there, the power differential, and the work of dismantling the system
dignity is something that causes us a ittle bit of confusion
we hear that we are made in the image of God and this is a catholic sacremntal understanding of the world -- and that's the way we ought to think about sancitity
difference between sanctitiy and dignity
in dignity - competing notions of justice -- can sometimes be merit based
sacntity is not merit based
within the cathlic curch , sacrrement = all of God creation is Good
and this makes our understanding of justice have some problems --
constantly asking -- do we operate in a wholeness of charity regardless of what we dserve or do we operate in justice ... based on merit?
that we all bare sacntity is A gift from the fact that we are created by God
our sanctity is given of a human legacy and derived from the baring of God's image -- they don't make sense .. they're gifts
dignity is meritorious -- a function of using autonomy in meritorious ways -- so that we bear dignity is a fucnciton of our being self concious rational autonomous agents --
this difference between sanctity has meaning ofr justice
when we try to apply meritorious standards in a realm that out to be based on our sancitity, we create gaps in the concpet of justice
this gap is where the need for solidarity conmes into play
solidarity - that's the moment when we stand in the gap -- when we stand in thespace between a concpet of meritorious justice and the injstice form not recongnizing everyon'e ssanctity , we're working toward justice and right relations
we have to stand in the space between some one else's ssuffering and our privilige
we have to be willing to speak before we have empowerment and to not lose sight of those of us whos still do not feel empowered
we can't stop working -- we must remain in the struggle (la lucha)
when we put ourselves in the space of vunerability that we're standing in solidarity
this is different than becoming an identity - this is the process of admitting through word and deed that there is a difference in the way that we are eperiencing justice and oru priority as LGBT persons to close the gap
as a feminisit -- aim is to dismantle the poweful
- black -- not to gaoin power, but to resist the restraints of the powerful
as a queer person, it's not to gain power, but to trouble the power dynamic
and as a black queer feminist woman who lives god, dismantling power was the greatest act that Jesus illustrated
liberation through the disruption of the system
Jesus showed us how justice and riteousness are to go to gether
we ought to be seeking a kind of justice taht radically reorients our leations to ourselves, our God and our neighbors
troubling of inequality power and privilage -- that's where we find our most holy selves
this effort is a kind of queered effort
relatinships and relationaility
relationships complell us to recognize the ways that were interconnected
-- each of us is a part of a whole
challenges basic notions of individualism and calls our attention to the fundamental togetherness created in God image
story of developing as I -- sustains the American dream narrative
a little bit unfortionate
makes us collude with that story -- when we know that its not true for most
-- we should begin with WE -- god created US in THEIR image
invites us to interrigate the norm of understanding ourselves as Is
queer allows us the chance to trouble the notion that I exist before we do -- our togetherness is much more important
- we before I can help us to understand solidarity
individual male leadership etc -- politically santioned -- also church santioned
.. envision our relationships .. not be confirmed to this world --
radically different understanding of relationships based on a kind of riteousness that bis based on the regonition tof the power dynamics that exist
real justice is intersectional -- radical -- turn things on its head -
attention to diversity within and among people is what it means to seak liberation for all people
MLK - injjustice anywhere is a trheat to justice anywhere
not worth it for some of us to bear priviledges of the system while others of us are struggling to survive
generations of values shifting -- powerful!
Jesus recognized that even in his efforst to remove the shackles of the system, he still had to teach his homies how to act
so he's trying to stand in the gap between ineqality and what could be radically different
in the gaps between mary m and his disciples -- woman could still tell the good news
work for changing the community was intersectional, multi-facited
=-----
struggle is to always stay in the margins-- that's where God lives
.. careful of wanting to be on the inside at any price (ex: limiting women's ordination while accepting homosexuality)
------------
picture a kind of leadership that is not based on the soling out of power but is based on a distribution of resources
charity helps us enter into relationship --> the we can really fight for justice
recognize the difference in the way society is doling out priviledge --
.. asking where do we need to stand in solidarity with folks where some people are benefitting from whiteness and others are not
intersectional justice
intersectionality - critical race theory -- Kimbery crinshaw
- there are lots of identities that we posses that come together and intersect -- so we need to think about a kind of justice that has to do with coalition building
concept of justice that we're not only once piece of our identity at any time
strategic element to it -- like voter id and LGBT rights in MN
how do you let go of power / convince others to
volnerability -- willing to make yourself volunerable
.. reflecting Jesus -- ultimate wounded person
called to be an image of Jesus and Jesus's volnerability in taking on human flesh
... relationships .. something that comes in our willingness to share our stories with one another
