Mourner Headwear

The inspiration piece, a 14th century female mourner circa 1380-1400

Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp

Step 1 - Make buns

Princess Leia, ahoy. The buns are probably the most time-consuming part of this process. Mine are messy and barely staying together, so there will be no tutorial on this step

Step 2 - Tie kerchief

Tie kerchief corners at nape of neck, with rest of kerchief draped over.

The kerchief I used for this part is about 28" square, and doubled over w/ the fold placed across my forehead. I imagine a smaller piece folded once in to a triangle (like a traditional bandana kerchief) would work as well.

Step 3 -

Tuck the ends of the kerchief under the knot to form a bag in the back.

Step 4 - Veil pinning

One end of a long oval veil* is pinned at the temples and top of head.

* Mine is the same dimensions as the Revival Clothing oval veil, about 26" x 38".

Step 5

Bring the loose end of the veil up to cover the chin, wrapping the rest up to the top of the head and pinning.

Finished

I could definitely use a friend to help pin and arrange the neck a little better. I also need to figure out a way to place the buns lower but still have them be secure. Stupid hair.
