Upgraditis is defined as the "insatiable desire to upgrade" coupled with a false belief that upgrading gear, hardware, software and anything else will bring better results, enhance creativity, yield more success and money, and will lead to experiencing happiness.
Normally, none of those results are achieved. The opposite is actually true, but those afflicted with the condition are in strict denial about the situation. When challenged, they normally argue that they haven't had time to upgrade enough. This makes Upgraditis such a difficult condition to treat.
There are several forms of Upgraditis, plus some serious side conditions.
Going from mild to severe these are:
a. Professional Upgraditis - the necessity to upgrade basic things like OS versions, antivirus software etc on a regular basis. This form occurs without any serious complications.
b. Forced Upgraditis - a system that forces the user to upgrade whether he wants it or not, using things like expiry dates, paid "update plans", software incompatible with older OS versions, and etc. This causes emotional and financial distress in the users and can only be cured by abandoning the makers of such software or hardware.
c. Advanced Compulsory Upgraditis (ACU) - is characterised by a total lack of good judgement, and reckless financial behaviour. ACU is complicated by a side condition called Post-Upgrade-Self-Sabotage-Disorder (PUSSD). This quasi-paranoid condition makes the subject believe that all productions before the last upgrade "sounded terrible" and need to be re-recorded, re-arranged and re-mixed all over. This type of Upgraditis is extremely dangerous as it locks the user into a cycle of eternal upgrading and re-arranging, and eventually leads to social isolation, financial ruin and often, insanity.
Unfortunately, there exists currently no remedy or medication for Advanced Compulsory Upgraditis.
However, researchers have found an inverse relationship between the years of experience and the degree of Upgraditis typically suffered. Thus, a typical 20 year-old DJ/ Producer will be very prone to developing Advanced Compulsory Upgraditis, while a 65 year-old seasoned producer will normally only suffer from type a, and in some rare cases from type b Upgraditis.
It seems that the only cure for Upgraditis is simply, time passing.
As time passes - as we achieve our goals, step by step - Upgraditis goes down to a normal level where it does not interfere with our lives any more.
Except on those damned days where we need to upgrade.
