Sonic Comfort: HD650 with LCD2

Headphone amps: Bryston BHA-1.

Personal opinion: Cashmere for my eardrums.

Folks, sometimes I don't want to hear every little detail. Like at the end of a tiring day. Released in 2003, the 650 remains very popular, providing abundant warmth and smoothness. Its highs are there, but they aren't dominant. It has a harmonically enticing midrange, with no brightness. Quite forgiving. Its bass can cloud finer details in the upper-mids and treble. Despite this, 650 is a stupendously appealing HP. Mood menu: Like curling up in front of a fireplace.

From http://www.headphone.com/headphones/sennheiser-hd-650.php:

The HD650 delivers silky smooth sound with a laid-back, mellow tonal delivery. A gorgeous can for acoustic music of all kinds and for listeners seeking warm, richly rendered detail without brightness or glare. Music is beautifully smooth and relaxed when it's supposed to be, and quick and punchy on demand.

Senn 650 (pale blue) vs. LCD2.2 (red) vs. Grados (click to enlarge). Treble at 2-8KHz is reduced in the 650, with bass boosted at 10-40Hz in 650, compared to Grado RS1i/GS1000i.
