Digital sources are CD players, digital players/streamers, and DACs. A separate DAC (digital-to-analog converter) should have extremely low jitter with separate, regulated power supplies for the digital and analog sections. The result? Ultra-low noise floor. More of the essence of the recording (pacing, rhythm, timing, instrumental/vocal nuances, spatial mapping) will reach the listener, unblemished and clear.
Sources are the first link in the signal chain of a two-channel system. As such, they are crucial for establishing the transparency and musicality of a system. If signal distortion occurs at the source, then all else is compromised -- there is no way to restore the original signal downstream.
