Message from the CLIR Chair

The 50th Anniversary of the ASEEES Annual Convention is now but a memory, but what a celebration it was. Some of the highlights include: the 50th Anniversary Celebration, with lively music and dancing; Slavic folk singing; a diverse lineup of films; always informative panels and roundtables; lunch dates and evening discussions among friends and colleagues; new restaurants to explore; the Awards Celebration and Presidents Program, with a standing ovation for June Pachuta Farris as the recipient of the CLIR Distinguished Service Award, accepted by Sandra Levy; and the kick-off of the Future of Field Campaign (I hope that everyone has made a pledge by now; if not there's still time to pledge your support).

For me, the panels and roundtables that I attended were especially informative this year. I learned about best practices and new tips and tricks about archiving sound files as well as many of the ethical considerations of sound archives. For many of us, this convention was the first that we can remember without our colleague, June Farris. I think that I can say for all of us that we deeply missed June's delightful personality, her optimism, her collegiality, and her friendship, not to mention her expertise. June will be remembered for many years to come.

By now most of us are accelerating into 2019, organizing panels, roundtables, and meetings for the next convention in San Francisco. The theme of the 2019 Convention is "Belief." The deadline for submissions is February 15th. In 2019, the CLIR Executive Council will be busy reviewing the appointment process, updating the Guidelines and Operating Procedures, reviewing potential Distinguished Service Award nominations, and preparing for the transition to new leadership, as my term as the CLIR Chair, and the terms of Subcommittee Chairs come to an end in 2019. It has been a pleasure to serve all of you and the organization, working with exceptional colleagues to help the Committee on Libraries and Information Resources serve the need of the ASEEES community and beyond.

Sincerely,

Jon C. Giullian
