Interactive Ray Tracing

Project description and objectives:

As parallel architectures become more efficient and cheaper interactive ray tracing is becoming a reality. It offers a number of benefits over the traditional rasterization pipeline, as well as a new set of display options, such as soft shadows, frameless rendering, more sophisticated lighting (indirect illumination), and different shading models with more accurate reflections. The project aims at developing a new approach towards interactive ray tracing for complex dynamic environments such as 3D digital games, using hybrid rendering and direct optimization of the ray tracing algorithm itself, as well as a CPU-GPU implementation with a particular interest in bounding volume hierarchies and spatial data structures. We have been studying the Unreal Engine 4 to verify the possibility of constructing a plug-in for generating dynamic scenes with this tool using our solution.
